Nice to meet you, lele, and thank you so much for joining!

You have a very interesting background! I wonder how living in three countries has influenced your knowledge of architecture and landscape architecture. Not many people have that experience!

Nagano is such a beautiful prefecture, it’s a place Tokyoites (like I was) go to escape the city. But Anan is quite the change from Shanghai! I don’t blame you for finding it not easy. There’s also a lot to learn in a new country, and with a toddler, AND during a pandemic, I imagine it must be challenging. Small towns in Japan tend to be very welcoming when it comes to children, I hope you’ve had that experience so far (or will in the future when the pandemic eases).

Hi Zia, thank you so much for joining.

A week-old baby! Congratulations! How are you feeling? It’s wonderful that you have a lot of support around you, especially during this time. And it looks like you may have another friend nearby (thanks for your comment, Pilaf!).

I hear you about being a workaholic, I was as well (and hence I also do not have many hobbies, apart from this blog I suppose)! You’re quite an active person, kickboxing sounds like an especially intensive but exciting hobby!

    Thanks for joining, Joshua.

I was reading a book about child-rearing by a psychologist several months ago and I wasn’t able to get through the beginning because she was emphasizing how much of a family and community effort it is to raise a child. But many of us in Japan don’t have that, with living in another country and then the pandemic on top of it. It’s absolutely parenting on hard mode, especially when it’s your first child.

My husband also works remotely (IT too) and it is amazing having the extra time with him since he doesn’t have to commute. So that’s one silver lining. It wouldn’t have been possible without the pandemic.

Like you, I’m hoping this community also provides some helpful information for parents who are doing this entirely alone and can be a source of support, however small it may be.

Nice to meet you, Elaine! I know we’ve connected a bit on Twitter but it’s really nice to hear more about you.

13 years in Japan! I imagine you may have also used printed-out maps to find places when you first arrived like I did (before smartphones became a thing), haha.

I can’t imagine how difficult these two-plus years in the pandemic have been for you and your family. I hope this pandemic ends soon…

I’ve heard about how friendly people in Aichi are! So happy that the people there are kind and supportive.

You do Naginata on top of being a full-time artist? That is really cool. I want to get back into video games so if you have any recommendations, send them my way! (The last game I played was Octopath Traveler… Before my daughter was born, eek!)

I am now very curious about your little bee’s “dancing”, haha. My daughter also has a stuffed kitty she’s obsessed with! And she likes Pikachu and puzzles too, although I don’t think she got into puzzles until she was 2 and was gifted one on her birthday.
