Unsurprisingly, Tokyo is packed with things to do with kids, whether you’re entertaining a curious toddler, a curious preschooler, or energetic older children who are ready for something new and exciting. There’s always something new popping up, from seasonal events and interactive exhibits to weekend activities the whole family can enjoy.
As a mom living in Japan, I’ve pulled together my personal picks for the best upcoming family-friendly events in Tokyo so you can spend less time searching and more time planning a day out.
Do keep in mind that dates, times, and details can change, so it’s always worth checking the official website before you go, especially since some events require you to purchase tickets in advance.
Note that these events can also be quite packed with visitors, particularly with one or two-day events, and on weekends and holidays.
Tokyo Family-Friendly Events for Kids in 2026
Detective Conan Cafe
Dates: April 10, 2026 – May 17, 2026; May 20, 2026 – August 2, 2026
This limited-time themed café has a nostalgic “port town retro” concept, with character-themed food, drinks, and exclusive goods. It is a strong option for Conan fans and for families with older kids who enjoy the series.

Sumida River Fireworks Festival
Dates: July 25, 2026
One of Tokyo’s most famous fireworks events, this riverside display is a major summer tradition and a great pick for families who want a classic Tokyo matsuri atmosphere.
Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori
Dates: August 29, 2026 – August 30, 2026
This dance festival fills the Koenji area with music, movement, and summer energy, and it can be especially fun for families who enjoy traditional performances in a festive street setting.
Harajuku Omotesando Genki Matsuri Super Yosakoi
Dates: August 29, 2026 – August 30, 2026
This high-energy yosakoi festival brings colorful dance teams to Harajuku, Omotesando, Yoyogi Park, and nearby areas, making it a fun late-summer event for families who enjoy live performances.
The Great Antarctica Exhibition
Dates: July 1, 2026 – September 27, 2026
This special exhibition at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, also known as Miraikan, allows families to learn about Antarctica and the work carried out by Japanese research teams.
Visitors can touch real Antarctic ice and meteorites, experience a simulated blizzard, see specimens of penguins and seals, and learn about life at Japan’s Showa Station. Children can also complete a mission sheet while exploring the exhibition, so it looks like a particularly good option for curious school-age kids.

Great Insect Exhibition at Tokyo Skytree Town
Dates: July 11, 2026 – August 30, 2026
This annual insect exhibition at Tokyo Solamachi includes beetles, unusual insects, specimens, and an area where children can interact with live rhinoceros beetles.
There are also displays about insects found in Japan, silkworms, large ants, unusual cockroaches, and insects that have been rescued and preserved as specimens. This looks like a fun option for kiddos who are fascinated by bugs, although it may not be ideal for anyone who is squeamish around insects.
🎟️ Advance ticket purchase is recommended but not required. Tickets are also sold at the venue, although combination tickets with the Tokyo Skytree observation deck must be purchased in advance.
YAESU KIDS EXPO 2026 Dinosaur Lab
Dates: July 14, 2026 – August 23, 2026
This dinosaur-themed summer event at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu features the enormous full skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus rex known as “STAN,” as well as a complete mosasaur fossil and fossils discovered around Tokyo and the Kanto region.
Children can also try fossil excavation, learn about dinosaur skeletons, and participate in dinosaur-themed workshops. This looks like one of the best summer events in Tokyo for children who love dinosaurs.

MIDTOWN Summer Workshops
Dates: July 17, 2026 – August 30, 2026
Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi is holding a range of creative and educational summer workshops for both children and adults.
The programs include art activities, crafts, parent-and-child workshops, and a hotel staff experience for children between the ages of three and eight. The dates, age requirements, prices, and application methods vary depending on the individual activity.
🎟️ Advance reservations are required for many of the workshops, although some activities can be joined on the day.
Kids Exciting Water Park at Tokyo Tower
Dates: July 17, 2026 – September 6, 2026
Tokyo Tower is opening a temporary outdoor water-play area for children during the summer holidays.
The event includes a free pop-jet fountain for children aged two and over, a small shark slide for children aged three and over, and a larger pool, water obstacle course, and slides for children aged four through elementary-school age.
The event may be cancelled when it rains or during severe weather, and it will also be closed on selected dates.
🎟️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. Registration takes place at the venue on the day.
Ultra Heroes Expo 2026 Summer Festival
Dates: July 18, 2026 – August 24, 2026
This large summer event at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro includes live performances featuring Ultraman characters, large-scale displays, character photo opportunities, and a shop selling event-exclusive merchandise.
The latest Ultraman character, Ultraman Teo, will appear alongside characters from earlier series as part of the Ultraman franchise’s 60th-anniversary celebrations. This looks like a strong option for children who are already Ultraman fans.
Note that the event will be closed on August 4.

Saikyo-Oh Zukan Festival at Tokyo Tower
Dates: July 18, 2026 – September 27, 2026
This interactive event brings the world of the popular Saikyo-Oh Zukan series to Tokyo Tower.
Children can see a lifelike Tyrannosaurus rex during an adventure show, watch an original dinosaur battle in 3D, color creatures that appear in a digital game, complete a quiz, and make a personalized digital Saikyo-Oh Zukan.
In September, the event will only be held on weekends and national holidays.

Caretta Shiodome Kids Summer Festival
Dates: July 25–26, 2026
This free summer festival at Caretta Shiodome includes a nine-meter-long Tyrannosaurus rex, dinosaur bazooka shooting, giant retro festival games, and an art activity for children.
Each child can receive a free booklet containing four festival tickets, which can be used to participate in activities such as jumbo yo-yo fishing, ring toss, bucket toss, and the dinosaur shooting game. The tickets are limited, so I would arrive early.
🎟️ Advance tickets are not required. Admission is free, although some food and drinks cost extra.
Kids Summer Workshop: Aquarium Product Planning Experience
Dates: July 25–26 and August 22–23, 2026
This workshop at Sunshine Aquarium allows children to experience what it is like to plan new aquarium merchandise.
Participants will observe either Cape penguins or Asian small-clawed otters, develop an idea for a new product, and present their idea at the end of the workshop. The program is only for children in grades four through six, and each session is limited to 20 participants.
🎟️ Advance ticket purchase is required. Participants and their accompanying adults will also need admission tickets for Sunshine Aquarium.
Detective Precure Mystery-Solving Festival
Dates: July 31, 2026 – August 23, 2026
This interactive event at Sunshine City allows children to enter the world of Detective Precure and help the characters solve a mystery.
The event includes play areas, photo opportunities, an immersive mystery-themed exhibition, and a daily stage performance featuring songs and dancing. It looks like an especially good option for younger children who already watch the series.
🎟️ Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Admission is divided into designated-time days and days with free entry, so check the schedule carefully before purchasing tickets.
ASOBono! Summer Festival
Dates: August 1–2, 2026
This small indoor summer festival at ASOBono! in Tokyo Dome City includes traditional festival-style activities such as super-ball scooping and target shooting.
There will also be a short parent-and-child dance event. Since everything is held indoors, this could be a convenient choice during extremely hot or rainy weather.
🎟️ Advance tickets are not required for the event. Participation is free, although regular admission to ASOBono! is required.
Super Hero Summer Festival 2026
Dates: August 1–12, 2026
This large indoor event at Tokyo Dome City brings together characters from Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and PROJECT R.E.D.
The festival includes superhero parades, dancing, live music, taiko performances, a science-themed bubble show, paid festival games, character photo opportunities, and event-exclusive merchandise.
The event is divided into a morning session and an afternoon session, and children aged three and over require a ticket.
