From seasonal celebrations and kid-friendly exhibitions to fun weekend outings for the whole family, this guide brings together my personal picks for upcoming events in Osaka that are actually worth adding to your calendar
Note that event details are subject to change. Please check the official website before visiting. These events can also be very crowded, especially if it’s a one or two-day event, and on weekends and holidays.
Osaka Family-Friendly Events for Kids in 2026

The Great Extinction Exhibition: Mass Extinctions — BIG FIVE
Dates: July 17, 2026 – October 12, 2026
This large-scale exhibition at the Osaka Museum of Natural History explores the five major mass-extinction events that changed life on Earth. Visitors can see fossils and other specimens, learn about the extinction of dinosaurs, and find out how life continued to evolve following each extinction event.
The exhibition also includes a large spherical video display, fossils and specimens from Japan and overseas, and research from excavations in Morocco. This looks like an especially good option for children who are interested in dinosaurs, fossils, and science.
️ Advance tickets are not required. However, purchasing tickets online may save time, especially on weekends and holidays.
Cosmos & Kochia Festa 2026
Dates: October 3–30, 2026
Expo ’70 Commemorative Park is holding its annual autumn flower festival, with cosmos and kochia filling the Flower Hill area.
There are also extra activities on selected dates, including small markets, workshops, live music, and bubble play for kids on October 24 and 25.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required for the main festival. Regular admission to Expo ’70 Commemorative Park applies. Some individual activities require advance reservations or an extra fee.

Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival
Date: October 17, 2026
The Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival is one of Osaka’s biggest fireworks festivals, with an hour-long show synchronized to music along the Yodogawa River.
The fireworks run from 7 PM to 8 PM, and the official viewing areas are on the Juso/Tsukamoto side of the river. The Umeda-side riverbank is closed to general spectators this year because of construction.
Paid riverbank seating this year is unfortunately completely sold out.
If you’re going with kids, keep in mind that this is an extremely crowded event. The organizers specifically warn families with small children to be extra careful in the crowds, and recommend entering the paid viewing areas by 6 PM.
️ Advance tickets are required for the official riverbank viewing areas. Paid seats range in price depending on the section, and children aged 3 through elementary school have discounted child tickets. Children under 3 can sit on an adult’s lap for free.
Tennoji Zoo Night Zoo
Dates: October 10–11, 17–18, and 24–25, 2026
Tennoji Zoo will stay open until 8 PM on selected evenings in October, giving families a chance to see the animals after dark. The zoo starts lighting up from around 5 PM, and some animals may behave differently in the evening than they do during normal opening hours.
On October 17 and 18, there is also an illuminated animal bingo activity where kids can search for LED animals hidden around the zoo.
I’ll be honest, I won’t be taking my daughter here because I am not a fan of Tennoji Zoo because of its poor condition.
️Advance ticket purchase is not required. Regular admission to Tennoji Zoo applies, although buying a ticket online in advance may save time on busy dates.
Sakai Festival 2026
Dates: October 17–18, 2026
Sakai Festival is one of Sakai’s biggest annual events, with performances, food, traditional culture, and activities spread across central Sakai.
For families, I would especially check out the Family Street on October 18, where there will be stage performances and real working vehicles that kids can see up close. There are also bicycle activities for young children, traditional performances, food stalls, and even sightseeing cruises around Sakai’s historic moat.

Expo ’70 Park Acorn Festival
Dates: October 10 – December 6, 2026
Kids can explore an acorn and seed display, use a special map to look for different types of acorn trees around the park, try an acorn and nut grabbing activity, and complete a stamp rally to receive a small prize.
There are also extra activities on selected dates, including acorn collecting, crafts, and nature programs.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required for the main activities. Most are free with regular park admission, although some workshops require registration or an additional fee.
Autumn Rose Festa at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park
Dates: October 24 – November 23, 2026
Around 2,400 roses from about 250 varieties will be blooming at the Peace Rose Garden during Expo ’70 Commemorative Park’s Autumn Rose Festa.
There are also special events on selected dates. On November 3, Kyoto Tachibana High School’s famous marching band will perform and parade through the park, and there will also be a bread festival on November 3, 7, and 8.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required for the rose festival. It is free with regular admission to Expo ’70 Commemorative Park, although some individual activities cost extra.
Hirakata Park Flowering Illumination
Dates: Selected dates from October 31, 2026 – April 4, 2027
Hirakata Park’s winter illumination is back with a new 17-meter-tall illuminated castle, lantern displays, light tunnels, and music-and-light shows.
There is also a new interactive area featuring Hirakata Park’s Gnome characters, where kids can press buttons to hear character voices and change the colors of the lights.
The illumination is included with park admission, so you don’t need a separate illumination ticket. I’ve taken my daughter to this event and it was absolutely magical.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required, although discounted evening tickets are available online. Check the official calendar because the illumination is only held on selected dates.

Tempozan World Performance Festival 2026
Dates: October 16–18, 2026
Tempozan Harbor Village, where Kaiyukan is located, is holding a three-day street performance festival.
Around 30 performers will be taking part, with everything from magic and juggling to BMX, music, and LED performances. This would be really easy to combine with a visit to Osaka’s famous Kaiyukan Aquarium since the performances take place around the aquarium and Tempozan Marketplace.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. The performances are free to watch.
NAKANOSHIMA ART LIGHTS 2026
Dates: October 16–25, 2026
Nakanoshima Park will be lit up with different light-art installations in the evenings during this free event in central Osaka.
From October 23 to 25, there will also be illuminated hot-air balloons, live music, and food and drinks. There will even be a small fireworks display on the opening night on October 16.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. The event is free.
Sylvanian Families Quiz Rally at Daisen Park
Dates: September 12 – November 23, 2026
If your child likes Sylvanian Families, there is a free quiz rally taking place around Daisen Park and the Mozu Kofun area in Sakai.
Families can walk around the park answering questions, visit large Sylvanian Families photo spots, and see a giant diorama inspired by hot-air balloons. Kids who complete the quiz rally will also receive an original sticker while supplies last.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. The quiz rally is free.
Midosuji Illumination 2026
Dates: November 3 – December 31, 2026
One of Osaka’s biggest winter illuminations returns to Midosuji in November.
Trees along Midosuji from around Umeda all the way down toward Namba will be covered in lights, so this is a really easy event to see without planning an entire day around it.

Osaka Central Wholesale Market 95th Anniversary Market Festival
Date: November 22, 2026
Osaka City Central Wholesale Market is opening to the public for a special festival celebrating its 95th anniversary.
There will be fresh food for sale, a tuna-cutting demonstration, and mock auctions where visitors can experience what fruit, vegetable, and seafood auctions are like. This could be a fun opportunity for kids to see a side of Osaka they normally wouldn’t get to experience.
Keep in mind that there is no visitor parking, so you’ll need to use public transportation.

WAO! Madagascar at NIFREL
Dates: September 19 – November 1, 2026
NIFREL is holding a special event all about Madagascar, which is home to animals such as ring-tailed lemurs.
Families can learn about Madagascar through displays involving sounds, smells, food, and animals, as well as get to know NIFREL’s individual ring-tailed lemurs. There are also special events on selected dates, so check the official website before visiting.
Note that NIFREL is located right next to Expo 70 Commemorative Park, so you can visit both in one day.

KAPLA Exhibition at Osaka Science Museum
Dates: September 19 – October 25, 2026
Osaka Science Museum is holding a special exhibition featuring creations made entirely from KAPLA wooden building blocks, which include elaborate creations such as towers, domes, animals, and even a DNA double helix.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. The exhibition is included with regular museum exhibition admission. Junior high school students and younger can enter the museum’s exhibition area for free.
Expo ’70 Park Fireworks, Drone & Music Show
Date: November 21, 2026
Expo ’70 Commemorative Park is hosting a huge evening show featuring approximately 15,000 fireworks combined with drones and music.
Unlike many fireworks festivals in Japan, all seats are reserved, which I think makes this much easier for families since you don’t need to arrive hours early to fight for a viewing spot.
The show starts at 7 PM, although the event area opens at noon.
️ Advance tickets are required. All seats are reserved and tickets may sell out.
“Mind the Gap” Train Safety Event at Kids Plaza Osaka
Dates: November 22–23, 2026
This train-themed event at Kids Plaza Osaka teaches children about the gap between train platforms and trains in a fun way.
Kids can practice using a cardboard model of an Osaka Loop Line train, complete a stamp rally, dance with the event character, and learn how to board trains safely. This sounds especially fun for younger kids who like trains.
️ Advance ticket purchase is not required. The activities are free with regular Kids Plaza Osaka admission. Some activities distribute same-day participation tickets from 9:30 AM.

Tower of the Sun Projection Mapping
Dates: Selected Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from November 22 – December 27, 2026, plus December 28–30
The Tower of the Sun will become the backdrop for a special projection-mapping show during the evenings at Expo ’70 Commemorative Park. Shows run from 5 PM to 9 PM and are projected several times each hour.
I think this could be especially nice paired with a daytime visit to the park since you can stay into the evening and see the Tower of the Sun transformed.
