Over almost twenty years of living in Japan, I’ve been to my fair share of Japanese theme parks, especially since I’m obsessed with rides and attractions. So I thought I would take this opportunity to share some of my favorites as well as popular ones that I want to eventually visit.

These parks are perfect for all ages, so if you have a family, they’ll be bound to have a great time just like mine did. Some of these theme parks also have seasonal events, such as illuminations in winter or fireworks in the summer, making them great to visit every season.

The Best Theme Parks in Japan to Visit

Here are my humble picks for the best theme parks to visit in Japan.

Tokyo DisneySea

Show at Tokyo DIsneySea

Tokyo DisneySea is the only DisneySea in the world, making it a must for every Japan itinerary. With its glowing volcano and shows on the waterfront, it’s truly a magical experience that makes you feel like you’ve traveled to a fantasy world.

However, given its popularity, Tokyo DisneySea is undoubtedly crowded.

If you’re visiting with young kids, I think Tokyo Disneyland is better because it’s not as crowded as DisneySea and doesn’t have as intense rides.

For those interested in visiting Tokyo DisneySea (and you should), make sure to read this article before you go!

Universal Studios Japan

I am a huge fan of Universal Studios Japan (USJ), so much so that I have an annual pass and go almost every month.

Although not as large as Tokyo Disney, it’s not nearly as crowded, and wait times are considerably shorter. However, Super Nintendo World can be bonkers and is, unsurprisingly, crazy crowded.

Universal Studios Japan features famous franchises like Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Nintendo, Minions, Peanuts, and Sesame Street.

Notably, USJ also has frequent collaborations with popular anime such as ONE PIECE and POKEMON. I always look forward to seeing what will be showcased next!

Fuji-Q Highland

Located in Yamanashi Prefecture, Fuji-Q is about two hours from Tokyo, but the journey is worth it, depending on what kind of theme park experience you’re looking for.

I visited Fuji-Q with a friend back in the day before I had kids, and it was quite a memorable experience! Fuji-Q boasts many record-breaking roller coasters and I’m not going to lie, after going on several, my heart was pounding so much that I decided to forgo one and head home!

My husband, who went with his friend before we met, said he never wants to go again.

Okay, so given this, you might be wondering why on earth I have Fuji-Q Highland on my list of the best theme parks in Japan? Well, if you love thrilling roller coasters, Fuji-Q will be a dream. After all, how many people can say they rode the world’s steepest roller coaster against a backdrop of Mount Fuji?!

The Mount Fuji view from the roller coasters is stunning, although I was screaming too much to enjoy it!

Fuji-Q also has a Naruto theme park inside where you can enjoy a 3D ride, VR attraction, and eat Naruto-themed food such as the famous Ichiraku ramen.

For young children, they might enjoy Thomas Land inside the park, which has Thomas-themed rides.

Sanrio Puroland

If you’re a fan of everything cute, Sanrio Puroland is the theme park for you. The inside makes you feel like you’ve ventured to a fantastical, wonderful land with twinkling lights, adorable music and sounds, and lots of decor featuring beloved Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty and My Melody.

The rides certainly aren’t thrilling, but there are shows and parades throughout the day you can enjoy, as well as lots of great photo spots and adorable food. I’m always exhausted after going here, but in a very happy way. And like some addict, I always can’t wait to go again.

I’ve written an article all about everything every visitor to Sanrio Puroland should know, based on my personal experience, so make sure to give it a read!

Nijigen no Mori

Naruto theme park grounds with Hokage rock

Nijigen no Mori is located on Awaji Island, almost two hours from Osaka Station and an hour from Kobe. Depending on where you’re coming from, it can be quite a mission to get there, but if you’re a fan of certain anime or games, it’s definitely worth it.

I didn’t have high expectations for this theme park, but I ended up loving it, as did my husband and daughter.

Notably, they have a theme park dedicated to Naruto, as well as one for Dragon Quest. Throughout the park, you’ll find pieces of Godzilla, and for those who are super adventurous, you can ride a zip line straight into Godzilla’s mouth!

I’ve written detailed articles about my visit to the Naruto theme park in Nijigen no Mori as well as Dragon Quest, so check them out to see what it’s like before you go!
