Wondering where to find the best playgrounds for kids in Sapporo?
Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido in Japan, is a beautiful place with the perfect balance of city life and nature. So I wasn’t surprised to discover that it boasts lots of huge and fantastic parks for kids! (I wish we had these parks in Osaka!)
The playgrounds in this list are great for kids to let loose and unleash their energy. Some are also located in beautiful parks where you can enjoy nature by the season. So let’s dive in!

Kita Ward
Tonden Park
Tonden Park has a fantastic playground with a huge roller slide for older kids. But don’t worry, there are plenty of smaller slides and other equipment for younger kids like toddlers as well!
Cost: Free!
Chuo Ward
Maruyama Zoo Playground
There’s a nice playground near the West Exit of Maruyama Zoo that has equipment for toddlers up to elementary school-age children. Note that this playground is closed during the winter season.
Cost: Included in the entry fee to Maruyama Zoo (800 yen for adults, free for children junior high school-age or younger)
Nakajima Park
Nakajima Park is located near the city center and is easy to reach by train. It not only has a playground, rental boats, and lots of beautiful nature but is also home to much more. For instance, you can visit Hoheikan, a Western-style building that was constructed in 1880 and is the oldest existing wooden hotel building in Japan.
There is also a theatre that holds puppet shows for kids.
For kids who like astronomy, I suggest visiting the free observatory.

Higashi Ward
Mikaho Park
Mikaho Park is filled with greenery and has some playground equipment for kids. There is also a section of the park dedicated to small animals like rabbits and goats.
In winter, kids can enjoy activities like ice skating.
Cost: Free!
Fushiko Park
Fushiko Park has lots of playground equipment for kids of all ages. In winter, kids can go sledding on the small hills in the park. In spring, summer, and fall, everyone can enjoy the beautiful seasonal flowers and foliage.
Cost: Free!
Nishi Ward
Noshi Park
Noshi Park is a great place to see cherry blossoms and they have plenty of nice playground equipment for children.
In summer they have a splash park and in winter, kids can play in the snow and slide down small hills.
Cost: Free!
Shiroishi Ward
Kawashimo Park
Kawashimo Park has both indoor and outdoor playgrounds, meaning it can be enjoyed all season. It has lots of greenery and seasonal flowers as well.
In summer, the park has an area for water play and they also have recreational facilities with a pool, golf, batting cage, and a tennis court. There’s an onsen and restaurant as well!
This park is especially famous for lilacs and holds a lilac festival every year in May.
Cost: Free for general entry but a fee is required for the recreational facilities and onsen.
Teine Ward
Shimo Teine Park
Shimo Teine Park boasts lots of colorful playground equipment for kids. It was recently renewed so everything is quite lovely and safe for children.
Cost: Free!
Toyohira Ward
Tsukisamu Park
Tsukisamu Park offers lovely views of seasonal flowers. You can rent a boat and enjoy paddling in the pond, or play sports among all the lush greenery. It also has a huge slide and playground for kids of all ages.
Cost: Free!
Shojin Riverside Park
Shojin Riverside Park is a great place to experience nature, with fish and ducks swimming in the river and beautiful seasonal flowers such as cherry blossom trees. Of course, it has playground equipment as well.

Atsubetsu Ward
Atsubetsu Yamamoto Park
Atsubetsu Yamamoto Park has a huge and new playground that kids of all ages are bound to love. Everything is forest-themed, which is really cute!

Minami Ward
Takino Suzuran Hillside Park
Takino Suzuran Hillside Park is another large and lovely park with seasonal flowers and foliage. There are outdoor playgrounds for kids as well as an indoor playground with colorful nets where they can play inside. This park has a campground as well for those who want to stay overnight.
In winter, the park becomes home to Takino Snow World Family Ski Resort.
The park is also somewhat close to a replica of Stonehenge.
Cost: 450 yen for guests over 15 years old, free otherwise.
