Visiting Miyajima and curious about what souvenirs you should buy?

Miyajima is an island in Hiroshima Prefecture that is known for its stunning views, deer, and one of the most famous torii gates in Japan.

My husband is from Hiroshima, so we visit Miyajima often and can’t help but buy something each time we visit. So, in this article, I thought I would share famous souvenirs that are worth the hype.

What to Buy From Miyajima

Here are some of the best souvenirs to get from Miyajima, from food to handicrafts.

Momiji Manju

This is undoubtedly the most popular souvenir in Miyajima. Momiji Manju (もみじ饅頭) is a Japanese confectionery that resembles a little cake with a sweet filling inside. Notably, this sweet is shaped like a maple leaf, or momiji in Japanese, since Miyajima is especially famed for its beautiful autumn foliage.

Five packages of different flavors of momiji manju

There are several flavors of Momiji Manju. The standard flavor that everyone should try is sweet red paste, which comes in two textures — smooth (koshian, こし餡 ) and mashed (tsubuan, 粒餡). If you’ve never had red bean paste before, I recommend trying it smooth.

Other Momiji Manju flavors include chocolate, matcha, and custard.

The most famous Momiji Manju company, and arguably the best, is Nishikido (にしき堂). I’ve tried Momiji Manju from different companies, but nothing is as good as Nishikido.

Although you’ll find Momiji Manju by Nishikido for sale throughout Itsukushima’s main shopping street, they have a large shop near Miyajima Station. I highly recommend visiting this store because they carry some really unique Momiji Manju boxes, such as Pokemon-themed:

As well as Pikman:

The boxes contain a variety of Momiji Manju, but the shape is the same as the original, so don’t expect anything too special other than the box itself.

However, there is a Doraemon Momiji Manju that comes in strawberry flavor. It also has an illustration of Doraemon and Dorami on it.

You can purchase the Doraemon Momiji Manju individually, too, if you don’t want to commit to a whole box.

When buying a box of Momiji Manju, make sure you check the expiry date because they expire rather quickly (in about a week or so).

Wooden Rice Paddle Chopstick Rests

Miyajima's rice paddles shamoji

Miyajima is also famous for rice paddles, called shamoji in Japanese, as it’s believed to be the birthplace of this tool. So naturally, you’ll find a lot of handcrafted rice paddle-themed souvenirs. One that I find particularly cute and practical is these wooden chopstick rests. These come in various designs such as deer, maple leaves, or Itsukushima Shrine’s famous torii gate.

Rice Paddle Straps

Another unique souvenir that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in Japan is these rice paddle straps. As you can see, the calligraphy on them is drawn by hand. You can choose from various designs featuring Itsukushima Shrine or Japanese (Chinese) Zodiacs.

You can find these at the shop Shakushi No Ie.

If you want something to hang in your house, consider one of these rice paddles. They have different kanji on them relating to a wish that you would like to be granted. For instance, passing an exam (合格).

You can also buy a rice paddle that you can actually use, too, but just know that these are not dishwasher safe.

Miyajima Magnets

I know, I know, magnets are so touristy. But you know what? I like them, and when I visit a different city in Japan (or a different country), I make sure to buy a few magnets — one for myself and others for family who can’t travel.

I think Miyajima’s magnets are beautiful, especially the wooden ones featuring Itsukushima Shrine.

Sumikko Gurashi Miyajima Goods

There’s a store in Miyajima that sells Miyajima-themed goods featuring Sumikko Gurashi characters and Rilakkuma. The store itself is unbelievably cute and perfect for photo ops, and the souvenirs are very hard to resist.

If you know someone who loves these kawaii characters, or you’re a fan yourself, make sure to stop by here. They have so many cute things to choose from that you won’t find anywhere else!

If you’re interested in collecting goshuin while you’re in Japan, I recommend getting a goshuincho book from Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima.

I have several goshuincho books, and this one from Itsukushima Shrine is one of my favorites.
