I am a huge Final Fantasy nerd, and if you are as well (which is likely, you’re reading this article, after all), you’ll be pleased to learn that there are plenty of places in Japan that cater to fans of the game.

In this article, I’ll share must-visit cafes, restaurants, and stores throughout Japan that are Final Fantasy-themed or sell Final Fantasy merchandise.

Final Fantasy Cafes and Restaurants in Japan

Currently, there are three places where you can enjoy Final Fantasy-themed cafes and restaurants in Japan. Each is unique, so if you’re a fan, I suggest trying to visit them all.

ARTNIA

This is one of the first (perhaps even the first) permanent Final Fantasy dining experiences in Japan.

Final Fantasy Cafe

Located in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, ARTNIA is a little dated, and the menu and decor pale in comparison to other Final Fantasy-themed restaurants on this list. However, it’s the only cafe that’s dedicated to all the games, as well as other Square Enix favorites such as Dragon Quest.

(If you’re a Dragon Quest fan, make sure to check out Dragon Quest Island near Osaka, it’s fantastic!)

ARTNIA also holds a special place in my heart because I remember being so excited when I first visited it many years ago. At the time, there were life-sized figures of Sephiroth and Cloud under the floors, which I thought was incredibly cool. They’ve gotten rid of those, but there is still an amazing room with crystal-shaped displays containing various Final Fantasy figures and accessories.

The cafe menu offers Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest-themed cocktails, drinks, food, and desserts. The cappuccinos typically feature art from the games, but they’re unable to offer this if they’re doing a collab.

The cocktails are only available after 5 PM and feature the guardian forces, materia, potions, and elixirs. A word of warning, though, these are strong. I got a Materia Blue cocktail, and it was a struggle to finish. (I’m more of a wine drinker.)

As for food, some dishes are cute with parfaits topped with Cloud’s Buster Sword and Chocobo pancakes. However, most are pretty plain with no additional Final Fantasy touch to them, which can be disappointing for fans.

If you want to purchase Final Fantasy merchandise, they offer a small selection of goods.

This is a decent cafe to experience Final Fantasy without needing to make a reservation in advance.

How to Get There

Eorzea Cafe

Eorzea Cafe, located in both Dotonbori (Osaka) and Akihabara (Tokyo), is dedicated to Final Fantasy XIV. It’s run by Pasela Resorts, which often has Square Enix collabs at their karaoke chains.

Unlike ARTNIA, you most likely need to make a reservation in advance for Eorzea Cafe, especially on weekends. The Akihabara location also charges a 1200 yen table charge per person (!), but this includes a drink and a free coaster. The Osaka location charges 700 yen, and you’ll receive a magnet and a coaster.

I absolutely love the decor in the Eorzea Cafe, especially the  Moogles figure in the Akihabara location that is drinking wine while suspended from the ceiling. The food tastes pretty good, too, although it could look a little better.

Notably, they offer an adorable Moogle Milk Tea that has the cutest Moogle marshmallow in it.

Where to Buy Final Fantasy Merch in Japan

As mentioned earlier, you can purchase a small selection of Final Fantasy goods at ARTNIA. But there are also plenty of other places where you can find Final Fantasy merchandise.

Notably, Square Enix Garden in Shibuya (Tokyo) sells a range of Final Fantasy items from stuffies to figures. I’ve also had some luck finding Final Fantasy merchandise at Nakano Broadway as well as in various shops in Akihabara. (Note, though, that second-hand shops in Akihabara such as Super Potato charge more than in less touristy areas.)

In Osaka, I was surprised to find a nice selection of Final Fantasy goods at Bic Camera in Namba, which is a short walk away from Osaka’s aforementioned Eorzea Cafe.

Japan-wide, you might be able to find second-hand Final Fantasy merch at Mandarake and BOOK-OFF. (BOOK-OFF is especially great for old Japanese-version Final Fantasy games.)
