Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort Review: Worth It?

We stayed at Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort during our trip to Miyakojima. The hotel had only recently opened when we visited, so I was really interested in checking it out.
Canopy is right next to Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort, but it feels more adult-oriented than the Hilton next door. We stayed here with our six-year-old daughter and had no problems, although I do think the Hilton is probably better for families with younger kids.
In this article, I’ll share our experience staying at Canopy for three nights so that you can decide whether it’s worth your time and money. Not to spoil the entire article, but overall, we had a really good stay. Everything was new and spotless, the service was great, the beds were incredibly comfortable, and I absolutely loved the rooftop pool. My main complaint was that I wish our room had been a smidge bigger, but it was still spacious enough by Japanese standards.
Our Stay at Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort
Checking In
We arrived at around 2 PM, even though check-in officially started at 3 PM.
Before our stay, I called the hotel to ask whether we could use the pool before checking in, and they told us that would be no problem. But when we arrived, they actually gave us the keys to our room straight away, which was very much appreciated. There was also no wait to check in either, which was great.
The service throughout our stay continued to be excellent, and we had a really good experience with the hotel even before we arrived.
We had paid extra for a refundable rate, and I’m so glad we did because there was a typhoon approaching Miyakojima. Our reservation had a cancellation deadline before our stay, but ANA wasn’t going to decide whether our flight would operate until after that deadline.
We called the hotel and explained the situation, and they were so nice about it. They told us that if ANA cancelled our flight and we couldn’t get to Miyakojima, they would refund our stay.
Thankfully, our flight wasn’t cancelled, but I really appreciated how flexible they were. If you’re traveling to Okinawa during typhoon season, I would definitely consider paying more for a refundable rate. Just make sure to check the cancellation conditions for the specific rate you book, as Hilton’s policies vary depending on the plan and dates.
Our Room
We stayed in the Twin Deluxe Room with Partial Ocean View. Since the hotel was so new when we stayed, everything still felt brand new and was absolutely spotless.
We had two Twin beds, and they were amazing. They were extremely comfortable, and there were two different kinds of pillows on each as well.
Near the entrance, there was quite a bit of hanging space and storage. The closet had some green robes just for Canopy guests to wear when they go to the pool, as well as some pool bags.
There were also pajamas and slippers, which were both very soft. They have children’s pajamas as well, but you need to ask the front desk for them, and they only come in one size (130).
The room also had a Nespresso machine, tea, a kettle, glasses, a refrigerator with free sanpin tea (jasmine tea), and a water jug. There are water stations on the guest floors where you can refill the jug.
The shower and toilet were separate, which I always like. The shower was spacious and had both a handheld shower and a large rain shower. The towels were also really fluffy and soft.
And the privacy button on the Washlet toilet was amazing, because I don’t need my family to hear me do my business (nor do I want to hear them do theirs!).
Both of our suitcases fit in the room, but I still wish there had been a little more space for them.
Our room had a beautiful view of the ocean and Irabu Bridge. The water around Miyakojima is gorgeous, and I would definitely want an ocean-view room if we stay here again.
The room also had a balcony, but there were no chairs outside, unfortunately. I really wish there had been a chair so we could sit there and enjoy the view. The balcony wasn’t huge, so I kinda get why there wasn’t much furniture out there, but even one small chair would have been nice. There also wasn’t a rack available to dry our clothes, which was annoying.
The Rooftop Pool
The rooftop infinity pool was my entire family’s favorite part of the hotel. It is absolutely stunning!
You can see the ocean and Irabu Bridge from the pool, and I loved being able to sit on a lounger and just look out at the water and sky. It was heavenly, and I felt totally spoiled!
So on the first day of our stay, I thought it was strange that there weren’t many loungers around the pool. Turned out they had removed them because of the typhoon, which had hit the day before our visit.
Thankfully, the loungers were put back the next day, and I was so happy. They’re incredibly comfortable, and I feel like no resort vacation is complete without some lounger time. If you want one facing the pool, I recommend coming right when the pools open, a little before 2 PM or right around 5 PM. During our stay, those seemed to be good times to get one, especially after 5 PM, as families with children under age 20 have to leave after 5 PM.
There are also couch-style daybeds closest to the pool, but these cost 4,000 yen per hour when we stayed. (I didn’t see a single person pay for these, but I saw plenty of people mistakenly try to use them and then be told by staff that these daybeds were not free.)
The pool itself is a little chilly. Our daughter got used to it after a while, though, and I was more than happy to swim in there even in the morning.
One thing to know is that you can’t use swim rings or floaties in the rooftop pool, and the pool is rather deep, so if your kid can’t swim, make sure to hold onto them.
There is also a hot tub, which was especially nice considering the pool water could feel a bit cold.
As mentioned earlier, after 5 PM, nobody under the age of 20 is allowed to use the rooftop pool, and they have to leave the area. As a parent, I don’t mind at all because we just hopped over to the pool next door at the Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort, which is a five-minute walk away. (Guests from Canopy can use the Hilton’s pool, but not vice versa. You need your room key to get in.)
The Hilton has several much larger pools, including pools that are better for families with younger children and one that has a water slide, but you can’t see the ocean from them.
If my kid wasn’t with me, I would have loved chilling at the Canopy pool after 5 PM with only adults. I especially think it would be super romantic and a perfect place to stay on your honeymoon.
You can order drinks at the pool as well, although when we visited, you had to go to the indoor bar to order drinks, which would then be brought to you at the pool. It was a little confusing because a sign said you couldn’t be wet when entering the bar area, but if people are using the pool, of course they would be wet! In this sense, it would have been nice if there had been a server at the pool taking orders.

The rooftop pool also has gender separated changing rooms with lockers, showers, and Dyson hair dryers. There is only one shower, but it’s large, and it was rarely ever occupied when we stayed here.
Breakfast
We had breakfast included with our stay, and I really enjoyed it. It was definitely one of the better breakfast buffets I’ve had at a hotel in Japan, especially since you get to choose one main dish from a menu, which is freshly made for you.
The buffet menu changes every two days, so if you’re staying for several nights, you’re not eating exactly the same food every morning.
The buffet had a good mix of Japanese and Western dishes, as well as Okinawan food. There were also breads and pastries, fruit, salad, cheese, cold cuts, hot dishes, rice, vegetables, and various local dishes.
When we stayed, the main dish menu choices included an omelette with Agu pork meat sauce, Eggs Benedict, and chilled Miyakojima mozuku seaweed noodles. I thought the Agu pork omelette was quite good, and I liked the Eggs Benedict. My husband said the noodles were so-so.
The only thing I didn’t think was particularly good was the customizable poke bowl. I’m not sure whether that had anything to do with the typhoon because fishing boats may not have been able to go out, but the fish just wasn’t that great when we had it.
Everything else we tried was good.
We went for breakfast at different times throughout our three days at the hotel, and interestingly, there was never a wait for a table at the breakfast buffet. Everyone was seated almost right away.
One thing I really liked about our meal plan was that we weren’t locked into using it for only breakfast. We were told that we could move it over and use it for lunch instead. I believe lunch was available until around 5 PM, so theoretically you could even have a very early dinner. This is quite nice, especially if you don’t feel like waking up early every day during your vacation.
I would check the exact conditions of your plan when booking because this may depend on the rate or package you choose.
The Beach Near Canopy
Canopy is right next to Sunset Beach, so you can easily walk down to the ocean from the hotel grounds.
However, the water clarity isn’t the best, and there’s lots of coral in the sand. If you’re looking for a stay with a super fantastic beach, this ain’t it.
Is Canopy by Hilton Miyako Island Kid-Friendly?
We stayed here with our six-year-old daughter and had a good experience.
She received children’s amenities, including pajamas, slippers, and toiletries, and she enjoyed the rooftop pool once she got used to the temperature.
That said, I wouldn’t choose Canopy specifically because you’re traveling with young kids.
The rooftop pool doesn’t allow floaties or swimming rings, children can’t use it after 5 PM, and the hotel in general feels more adult-oriented.
The neighboring Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort has much larger pools and is probably better for families with toddlers or younger children who want to spend a lot of time playing in the water.
But if your child is a little older and happy just swimming, I think Canopy is a good option, especially as our daughter loved it.
There is also a free playroom in Canopy called Shima Sprouts that my daughter was obsessed with.
She could play Nintendo Switch games, as well as board games, wooden toys, and LEGO. She also loved the little house made out of LEGO-like blocks.
If you want to borrow the Switch games, ask the reception in the room.
It was heaven for her, and she actually just wanted to stay here instead of going sightseeing on the island. (Which created a bit of a pickle for us!)
There is also some space outside for kids to play sports.
Would We Stay at Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Again?
We would absolutely stay at Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island again. It was a perfect stay for our trip to Miyakojima (if you need some help, read this article for how to plan a trip to Miyako Island and what to do!).
We really liked how new and clean everything was; the service was great, the beds were amazing, and I absolutely loved the rooftop pool. I would gladly spend another afternoon lying on one of those loungers looking at the ocean.
But if you absolutely need chairs on the balcony, a super spacious room, and an amazing beach, Canopy might not be for you.
