If you’re planning a trip to Huis Ten Bosch, you might be wondering whether it’s actually worth staying overnight or whether you should just visit for the day.

We decided to stay overnight at Huis Ten Bosch and tried two of its hotels during our trip: Hotel Europe and Hotel Amsterdam.

Hotel Europe is Huis Ten Bosch’s highest-ranking hotel, and after staying there, I can definitely see why. Hotel Amsterdam, meanwhile, is located almost right in the center of the park, which makes it super convenient, especially if you’re visiting with kids.

There are also three other official Huis Ten Bosch hotels: Forest Villa, Hotel Den Haag, and Hotel Rotterdam. I haven’t personally stayed at those hotels, although one of my friends stayed at Forest Villa with her children, so I’ll share her experience below as well.

If you’re deciding between the two hotels we stayed at, my quick answer is that Hotel Amsterdam is better for convenience and Miffy fans, while Hotel Europe is fancier and the one we personally preferred (but is pricier).

In this article, I’ll compare all five hotels at Huis Ten Bosch, but I’ll go into much more detail about the two we actually stayed at, so you can see which one is right for you.

Is It Worth Staying Overnight at Huis Ten Bosch?

So, let’s get straight to the point: is it actually worth spending the night at one of Huis Ten Bosch’s hotels?

Here’s what my husband and I think based on our experience. If you’re short on time, I don’t recommend staying overnight here. But if you want to enjoy the park at a leisurely pace, especially if you have young children, I think it’s worth it. We really enjoyed our stay, although I think two nights (which we did) is a little too much. One night is just right.

Huis Ten Bosch is huge and a little remote, so although you can certainly visit on a day trip, we found there was plenty to keep us busy over two days. Staying overnight also means you can enjoy the illuminations at night (which are lovely), and I found that having our accommodation right inside Huis Ten Bosch made the entire trip feel more relaxed. This meant we didn’t have to rush off to catch the train back to Nagasaki or Fukuoka!

And if you’re traveling with kids, being able to return to your room when everyone is tired is very helpful. And as an adult, I appreciated not having to get on the train after a day at the park!

How Huis Ten Bosch Tickets Work When Staying at an Official Hotel

One thing that’s a little confusing when booking one of the Huis Ten Bosch hotels is how the park tickets work.

This is especially important to know if you’re staying at Hotel Amsterdam, since the hotel itself is located inside the paid Park Area. If you arrive while Huis Ten Bosch is open, you’ll need a valid park admission ticket to get to the hotel.

You don’t need a Huis Ten Bosch admission ticket to check into the other hotels, though, since they’re located outside the theme park section of Huis Ten Bosch that has the rides. Hotel Europe, Hotel Den Haag, Forest Villa, and Hotel Rotterdam can all be reached from the Welcome Area via shuttle bus without entering the paid part of Huis Ten Bosch. Hotel Amsterdam is different because it is the only hotel located inside the paid Theme Park Zone, so you’ll normally need a valid Huis Ten Bosch passport to reach it while the park is open.

Guests staying at one of the five official Huis Ten Bosch hotels who purchase either a 1 Day Passport or After 3 Passport for their first day will receive a 1 Day Passport for the following day. You’ll need to keep your first-day ticket and show it at the hotel when getting your next-day passport.

Since we stayed at Hotel Amsterdam our first night, we arrived in the afternoon, used an After 3 Passport to enjoy Huis Ten Bosch for the rest of the day and evening, stayed overnight, and then had a full 1 Day Passport to use the following day. And then we were able to get another 1 Day Passport from Hotel Europe for free when we stayed there our second night!

Note that if you’re staying at Hotel Amsterdam and don’t arrive until after Huis Ten Bosch has closed for the day, you don’t need to buy an admission ticket just to check in, and you’ll receive your 1 Day passport that you can use the next day.

If you arrive after Huis Ten Bosch is closed, go to the hotel baggage check-in area near the main entrance and use the phone there to contact Hotel Amsterdam. Hotel staff will then come pick you up in a private car and take you to the hotel.

Just keep in mind that this only applies after the park has fully closed. If you arrive after the final admission time but while Huis Ten Bosch is still open, you’ll still need a valid park passport for that day.

Hotel Guests Get Early Entry to Huis Ten Bosch

Another really useful perk of staying at one of the five official Huis Ten Bosch hotels is being able to enter the park an hour before the official opening time. However, only a select few attractions are open at the time.

rides that are open early at huis ten bosch
I’m not sure if there’s an English version of the card; my husband is Japanese, so we received a Japanese one.

When we stayed, we were given a card at the hotel showing which attractions would open early. These included:

  • Miffy’s Dream Storybook
  • Uncle Pilot’s Flight Adventure
  • Miffy & Friends Yacht Sailing
  • Greeting Gallery
  • Sky Carousel
  • Mission Deep Sea
  • Evangelion: The Ride

I think this is especially beneficial if Miffy Wonder Square is one of your priorities, since four attractions in the Miffy area open early for hotel guests.

Just keep in mind that the early-entry attractions and park opening times can change, so I recommend checking the information you’re given at your hotel.

A Look at Huis Ten Bosch Hotels and Our Experience

Hotel Amsterdam

Hotel Amsterdam is the only official Huis Ten Bosch hotel that is located inside the Huis Ten Bosch theme park. In fact, it’s inside Miffy Wonder Square!

For this reason, I think it’s probably the best choice for families with young children and anyone who’s mainly visiting for Miffy, which is why we chose this hotel. There are also two types of Miffy-themed rooms, but we didn’t stay in either.

Most of the guests we saw here were families, and hotel guests can take advantage of early entry to several Miffy attractions in the morning.

We received a massive (but adorable) Miffy parfait when we checked in (two since there were two adults). It was a little too much for us, though, especially since we don’t like sweets all that much.

Our twin room was quite large for Japan standards at 45 square meters, with plenty of space for the three of us and all our luggage.

The toilet was in its own room (always a win for me) but the bathroom was rather dated, especially the taps.

Overall, though, I found the room and beds comfortable, and breakfast was nothing to complain about. There was a decent selection, including Nagasaki specialties such as sara udon and castella cake.

As you can see in the image above, they also have super cute plates for kids! (I mean, adults can probably use it, too, no one is stopping you!)

Would we stay here again? Probably not, especially because my daughter is older now.

For parents with young children, though, Hotel Amsterdam is hard to beat for convenience. We were able to walk straight out of the hotel and line up for the Miffy & Friends Yacht Sailing ride in about a minute!

So if location, Miffy, and having lots of room are your priorities, I think this is a great choice. It’s also the best value if you arrive after the park closes since you’ll get a 1 Day complimentary passport without having to purchase one the previous day.

Hotel Europe

Hotel Europe was our favorite of the two hotels we stayed at.

Huis Ten Bosch calls it its highest-ranking hotel, and it definitely felt more luxurious than Hotel Amsterdam. The atmosphere was quieter and more elegant, and even my daughter loved staying somewhere so “fancy.”

Although our Deluxe Room was slightly smaller than our Hotel Amsterdam room, I still preferred it. The beds were more comfortable, the bathroom had a separate bathtub and shower, and our canal view overlooking the Domtoren and European-style buildings was beautiful.

The sink in the bathroom also didn’t look as dated as at Hotel Amsterdam.

I also thought breakfast was considerably better, with a more peaceful atmosphere, delicious food, made-to-order omelets, and even all-you-can-drink sparkling wine.

The trade-off is its location. Hotel Europe is on the opposite side of Huis Ten Bosch’s main entrance, which means it isn’t as convenient for quickly popping back to your room during the day. However, you can take the shuttle bus, canal boats, or Hotel Europe’s special guest cruiser rather than walking all the way there.

Despite this, I would absolutely stay here again. I would especially recommend Hotel Europe to couples or adults looking for a quieter, more luxurious stay, although my six-year-old daughter absolutely loved it too.

Forest Villa

I haven’t personally stayed at Forest Villa, but one of my friends stayed there with her two children and really liked it.

Forest Villa is completely different from Hotel Europe and Hotel Amsterdam because you stay in a two-storey cottage surrounded by trees and water. Huis Ten Bosch describes it as a lakeside cottage hotel designed to feel almost like having your own vacation home.

My friend told me she loved staying there because being in a little cottage beside the water made her feel like she was vacationing somewhere in Europe.

Her kids particularly loved looking at all the ducks in the water outside. After hearing about her experience, I really want to try Forest Villa myself, especially since my daughter loves wildlife.

In fact, I think this is probably where I’ll stay the next time we visit Huis Ten Bosch.

Hotel Den Haag

Hotel Den Haag is another option if you’re looking for somewhere quieter.

It’s an oceanfront hotel overlooking Omura Bay, but it is much farther from the central areas of Huis Ten Bosch than Hotel Amsterdam. Huis Ten Bosch currently promotes it as its oceanfront option, with a focus on the views and dining.

I haven’t stayed here myself, so I can’t compare the rooms or food firsthand.

I would probably choose it if I wanted a peaceful waterfront stay and didn’t mind being further away from the main part of Huis Ten Bosch. It also has free onsite parking for guests.

Hotel Rotterdam

Hotel Rotterdam is the most chill of the five official hotels, with a more modern design than the traditional European style of Hotel Europe and Hotel Amsterdam.

I haven’t stayed here either, but I think it’s not a bad option if you want a room that’s simple and reasonably priced.

However, it may make sense if you mainly want an official hotel and don’t care as much about the grand European atmosphere.

Notably, this hotel is the only one at Huis Ten Bosch that has a laundromat inside.

Are There Laundromats at Huis Ten Bosch Hotels?

There is only one shared coin laundromat inside Huis Ten Bosch, located in Harbor Town behind Bayside Kitchen. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from Hotel Europe, Forest Villa, and Hotel Den Haag, and about six minutes from Hotel Amsterdam.

Hotel Rotterdam is the exception, as it has its own coin laundry inside the hotel.

Huis Ten Bosch Onsen

Guests staying at all five official hotels can use Huis Ten Bosch Onsen, although Hotel Europe guests get the best deal. Hotel Europe guests can use the large public bath for free apart from the 150 yen bathing tax and there’s a direct bus to the onsen from the hotel.

Huis Ten Bosch Onsen

Guests at Hotel Amsterdam, Forest Villa, and Hotel Den Haag can also use Huis Ten Bosch Onsen, but you have to take the shuttle from the Harbor Town bus stop rather than directly from your hotel. However, Hotel Rotterdam is within walking distance of the onsen (around 10 minutes).

I go into more detail about the onsen, including the tattoo rules and our experience using the shuttle, in my Hotel Europe Huis Ten Bosch review.

Hotel Europe vs Hotel Amsterdam: Which Did We Prefer?

After staying at Hotel Europe and Hotel Amsterdam, I would choose Hotel Europe if I were deciding between those two again. But it depends on your circumstances.

If you have young children, want to get to Miffy Wonder Square as quickly as possible, or simply value location above everything else, Hotel Amsterdam is probably the more practical choice. If you’re a big Miffy fan, the Miffy Rooms alone may make Hotel Amsterdam worth choosing.

It’s also the best deal if you arrive after Huis Ten Bosch closes for the day because it’s the only hotel that will give you a 1 Day Passport for free in this circumstance. (For other hotels, you need to have a valid 3 PM or 1 Day Passport to get a complimentary 1 Day Passport for the next day.)

But if you want the nicest overall hotel experience, I would pick Hotel Europe.

And after hearing my friend’s experience, the hotel I’m most curious about staying at next is Forest Villa.

How Many Nights Should You Stay at Huis Ten Bosch?

For most visitors, I think one night is perfect. Arrive at around 3 PM to get the After 3 PM Pass, get a feel for the park, stay the night and then enjoy the park the next day and leave in the late afternoon or evening.

That gives you time to enjoy the park during the day and at night without feeling like you have to rush through everything.

We stayed for two nights, but it felt too long.

So, Is Staying at Huis Ten Bosch Worth It? My Honest Thoughts

If you want the full Huis Ten Bosch experience and are traveling with young kids, I think staying overnight at Huis Ten Bosch is definitely worth it.

That being said, you definitely don’t need to stay overnight to enjoy the park.

But Huis Ten Bosch is huge, and I think part of what makes it special is getting to experience it after dark, especially the stunning illuminations. You also don’t have to worry about the clock because you need to get back somewhere else. Staying overnight definitely made our visit considerably more relaxed.

Between the two hotels we tried, Hotel Amsterdam was better for convenience, especially with young kids, while Hotel Europe was our favorite hotel overall.

And after hearing about my friend’s stay at Forest Villa, I have a feeling we may end up trying a completely different option next time.
